The Bar

By Kyle Aisteach

She didn't know what to expect. The bar exam is customized to each student. But she had never imagined the bot at the reception desk would tip its chrome head as it scanned her biometrics and say, "I'm sorry. We can't give you your exam today. You've been charged with anti-government activity." She swallowed. "I haven't been informed of any charges, and, regardless, under the Gehmen holding, the bar association can't prohibit someone accused of a crime from sitting for the exam. You can merely withhold admittance to the bar until a verdict is reached." The bot clicked officiously. "Sitting for the bar exam requires approval of your degree-granting instutition. Your contract with them stipulates that approval is withdrawn if accused of anti-American activities." She leaned forward and clutched the reception desk. "You'll need to show me that contract, signed by all Parties. Otherwise, under Civil Code Division 3, Part 2, Title 4 my contract with you to administer the test is dominant." The bot clicked again. "We have refunded your payment and your spouse accepted it, terminating our contract." She shouted, "Community property derives from common law! My husband can accept property on my behalf but cannot terminate a contract I entered into severally!" The bot clicked one last time. "You have demonstrated full competence in the areas of criminal, contract, and family law. Congratulations on passing the bar exam."
